Paul Merson believes that Tottenham’s failure to capture reported midfield target Jack Grealish at Aston Villa isn’t the end of the world.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs had a £25million bid rejected for the English playmaker on Wednesday and Championship side Villa then stood firm over keeping him on deadline day.

Grealish was heavily linked with a switch to the North London club during the summer, but the report details Villa are now prepared to offer him a new deal.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is considered a pivotal player in Steve Bruce’s side and is a technically gifted player.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has insisted that Grealish wouldn’t have been a marquee addition for Spurs and claims they are right not to pay over the odds for him.

“Jack Grealish is a decent player, but he isn't going to win you the league,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It's one of them, he's a young player, he's English so let's bring him in, but he's not going to play so, for me, they're right to stick their heels in saying 'we rate him at this much' but he won't be a loss to Tottenham.”

The failure to capture Grealish meant that Spurs went throughout the entire summer window without signing a single player, but on the flip side they didn’t lose any key men.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino will have to make do with the same group of players and his side begin the new Premier League season with a trip to Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
