So after weeks of speculation linking Danny Ings with almost every club outside the Premier League’s top six, Southampton won the race to sign the Liverpool striker – and they did so without spending a single penny, initially at least.
No wonder Newcastle United fans have, again, been left hugely disappointed.
It is no secret that Rafa Benitez had wanted to bring Ings to St James’ Park for some time. The Sun reported that the Spaniard wanted to sign the former Burnley striker after completing the loan swoop of Salomon Rondon – while Ings was allegedly wanted last January too, according to The Chronicle.
It had been claimed that Liverpool wanted £20 million for Ings but, given that he has struggled badly with injuries since moving to Anfield in 2015, it seems that no one wanted to meet that asking price. In the end, Southampton signed the 26-year-old on loan and they have a year to find the £20 million required to make his deal permanent, according to The Telegraph.
Now, Ings might have scored just four league goals in three years but he has the innate poachers ability that would do Newcastle the world of good. And the fans are wondering why they didn't make a move, particularly with plenty of money in the bank from the sale of Aleksander Mitrovic.
This feels like a real missed opportunity – again.
@NUFC just wondering why you never went in for a loan move for Danny ings he would have guaranteed you goals something Newcastle Are lacking— michael baxter (@thebigscot) August 10, 2018
Ings to Southampton on loan and permanent at end of season. Hang your head in shame Ashley. Another transfer deadline profit. Just a liar.— Stephen Bonnington (@steviebee63) August 9, 2018
Baffling, the likes of Bryan, Ings and Perez seem to have been within reach but we have an owner who hates us and an MD who seems unable to do two things at the same time or is under orders to hold us back.— Shaun Sisterson (@shauny515) August 9, 2018
