Federico Fernandez is reportedly on Tyneside undergoing a medical.
Swansea City assistant manager Billy Reid has been quoted by the Evening Chronicle as saying that he expects Spanish defender Federico Fernandez to join Newcastle United on Thursday.
The Chronicle have claimed that the 29-year-old is currently in the north east undergoing a medical to move to St. James' Park, for a reported fee of £6million.
Fernandez has been linked with Newcastle for the last couple of weeks and Rafa Benitez has opted to add the Argentinian star to his side, and a move is nearly complete.
Reid, who is currently second in command at Swansea to manager Graham Potter, has been quoted by the Chronicle as saying that "it looks like" Fernandez will become a Newcastle player before Thursday's 5pm deadline.
“Yes, Fede has been here through pre-season and was excellent on Saturday but he is a player who sees future elsewhere, it is not settled yet but it looks like he will go to Newcastle," Reid said.
A 32-time Argentina international, Fernandez brings huge experience with him to Newcastle, after spells with Napoli, Getafe and Estudiantes.
He has two years remaining on his contract at Swansea but is now expected to join Newcastle and remain in the Premier League, after playing in Swansea's opening Championship encounter - which resulted in a 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
