According to a report in the Guardian live blog (13:08, 9th August), Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has given up on signing a left-back and a number 10.

Newcastle wanted both defensive and attacking cover this summer, but they have failed to get deals over the line.

Benitez’s latest target was Stoke City’s Erik Pieters, but Newcastle’s board wouldn’t sanction the deal.

It means that Newcastle go into the new campaign with Paul Dummett looking likely to start at left-back.

Ayoze Perez will also be integral to Newcastle’s plans, as Benitez was unable to bring in another deep-lying forward.

Newcastle have frustrated their supporters with the lack of ambition they have shown in the transfer market so far.

Newcastle could still bring in a deadline day signing though, as they are pushing to sign Swansea City’s Federico Fernandez.
