Pundit Paul Merson has told Sky Sports News (09/08/2018, 15:30) that he would buy Tottenham Hotspur's Mousa Dembele to replace Paul Pogba at Manchester United.
Mauricio Pochettino will be bitterly disappointed at heading into the new season without a single new face, and he may yet end the month with some players leaving the club.
Sky Sports recently reported that Tottenham were willing to sell three senior players, with Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Mousa Dembele all made available for transfer.
However, Spurs haven't sold any of them, and they may now hope that European clubs come in with bids in the coming weeks, given that the market closes around Europe on August 31st.
With his contract expiring next summer, Dembele seems primed for the exit, with Spurs hoping to cash in before he leaves for free in 2019, despite him playing regularly under Pochettino.
The Belgian midfielder has been integral for Spurs since a 2012 move from Fulham, but questions about his age, fitness and contract have led to Tottenham being open to letting him go.
Pundit Paul Merson can't believe that stance, and told Sky Sports News (09/08/2018, 15:30) that if he was in charge of Manchester United, he would immediately sell midfielder Paul Pogba and replace him with Dembele, because he is one of the best around – though it's fair to say few United fans would echo those sentiments.
"I’d buy Dembele tomorrow morning," said Merson, which obviously he couldn't because the deadline was this evening. "He’s one of the best players in the Premier League. If I was Man United, I’d sell Pogba tomorrow morning for £100m and buy Dembele. All day long. I think Dembele’s up there with the best of the best," he added.
