Manchester United have been tracking the Tottenham Hotspur defender all summer long, according to reports.
According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United are planning one final attempt to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld by offering the north London outfit the choice of either Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo in an attempt to sweeten the deal.
The three-time European Cup winners will obviously have to offer Spurs a substantial cash amount too, if they are to have any chance of snaring the classy centre-back.
United’s courtship of the Belgian has been one of the most drawn-out transfer sagas of the summer, but the Red Devils have yet to make a formal approach to Tottenham for the defender, according to a report from the Express.
The Express claims that Spurs value the 29-year-old at £55 million – a fee that United are unwilling to pay, and it seems ever more likely that Jose Mourinho will miss out on one of his key summer transfer targets.
Alderweireld is unquestionably one of the continent’s finest centre-backs, and whilst Tottenham will not want to lose him, they might just be tempted into doing business with United, if they are offered a sizeable cash sum in addition to the services of either Smalling or Rojo.
If United are to bring the Belgian to Old Trafford, something has got to give, and fast, with tomorrow’s 5pm deadline looming large.
The Red Devils hierarchy will have to pull out all the stops, however, with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy sure to drive a hard bargain once again.
