Rafa Benitez cannot even hide his frustration at the lack of transfer activity at Newcastle United.
Despite being promised funds to spend by owner Mike Ashley at the start of the summer, The Magpies have only splashed out a combined £16 million on five new signings – one of whom was a free transfer and the other a loan.
But claims from Spanish media outlet BL es Noticas are stating that Newcastle are one of two Premier League sides to make a bid for Real Sociedad talisman Willian Jose this summer.
The other, newly promoted Fulham, offered £26 million according to The Mail. So considering Newcastle’s financial situation, it is surely unlikely that their bid was quite this high.
Though the report adds that Jose would prefer to stay in Spain rather than move to England which would surely rule out a move to Fulham, Newcastle or Chelsea, who are allegedly the most recent side to contact the striker’s representatives.
Borussia Dortmund and Valencia are also reportedly interested in a player who has a release clause in his contract worth around £60 million. That is a huge fee but the 6ft 2ins Brazilian has an impressive record in Spain, netting 20 goals in 40 games for Sociedad last season.
He also impressed at Las Palmas and made one La Liga appearance for Real Madrid in 2013/14.
