Tottenham Hotspur defied their threadbare squad on Thursday morning by hammering Italian side Roma 4-1 in the International Champions Cup.

After beating Southend United and Brentford in behind-closed-doors friendlies, Tottenham were in action over in San Diego as they took on Roma in a much sterner test.

Spurs made the worst possible start though, as neat footwork from Patrik Schick enabled him to gain a yard of space inside the penalty area and fire beyond Michel Vorm inside the first three minutes.

However, Spurs roared back, with Fernando Llorente heading home an equaliser before the Spaniard tapped home from close range for his second, pouncing after Antonio Mirante parried Lucas Moura's volley.

Moura then got himself on the scoresheet, heading home Serge Aurier's cross despite being one of the smallest players on the field, and the Brazilian capped off a superb display with superb footwork and an accurate low drive on his left foot to seal a 4-1 win.

A January signing from Paris Saint-Germain, Moura had a slow introduction to life in the Premier League having been frozen out in France, but he showed what he is capable of this morning.

The 25-year-old showed pass, skill, imagination and fine finishing to give Spurs their win, and whilst Spurs may be looking for another winger, Moura has reminded Mauricio Pochettino that what he can do.

Tottenham fans unsurprisingly hailed Moura after the game, and amid the club's transfer problems having failed to make a single signing this summer, calling on him to start with Son Heung-min out of the start of the season - and they feel that Moura is like a new addition himself ahead of the new Premier League season.
