According to a report from the Daily Mail’s live transfer blog (26/07; 13:26), West Brom are rivalling Premier League sides to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood after the Republic of Ireland international saw a potential move to Cardiff City fall through earlier in the window.

Westwood is going into this campaign off the back of a season that was largely blighted by injury and the Daily Mail is now reporting that the Owls are keen to sell the stopper amid plenty of interest from clubs in England’s top two divisions.

According to the Mail’s live transfer blog (26/07; 13:26), Cardiff saw a potential move for the 33-year-old collapse earlier in the summer as they could not agree a fee for Westwood, and now West Brom and Stoke are both eyeing a move.

It is interesting that the Baggies are reportedly rivalling Premier League sides for Westwood. Darren Moore’s men’s first signing of the summer was Sam Johnstone, and it would be a surprise if he was not the first-choice at The Hawthorns during the coming campaign. Jonathan Bond has also been brought in, seemingly as Johnstone’s understudy.

Westwood would be a superb signing for most Championship sides. Before last season, the stopper had established himself as one of the best and most reliable goalkeepers in the second tier and he is heading into a stage of his career where he may still be able to enjoy some of his best years.

And perhaps Moore feels that having him in the ranks may help bring the best out of Johnstone and ensure that the former Manchester United ace does not allow any complacency to creep into his game.
