Tottenham Hotspur have left Joshua Onomah out of their pre-season squad.

Tottenham Hotspur named their squad for their pre-season tour of the United States today – and Joshua Onomah’s exclusion has raised eyebrows.

Spurs have already beaten Southend United and Brentford in behind-closed-doors pre-season games, but games in America against Roma, Barcelona and AC Milan will give Spurs a sterner test.

Mauricio Pochettino is left a little depleted though, as Hugo Lloris, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose, Mousa Dembele, Dele Alli and Harry Kane are all missing having been given breaks after their World Cup exploits.

The likes of Davinson Sanchez and Christian Eriksen are though included, and whilst the exclusion of Marcus Edwards may spell the end for his Tottenham career, Joshua Onomah being left out was puzzling.

The 21-year-old midfielder has come up through the ranks with Tottenham, and spent last season on loan with Aston Villa, registering four goals and three assists in 34 Championship games.

Onomah has been tipped for a bright future with Spurs, but his omission from the squad heading to the United States has left many wondering whether he could be heading to the exit door.

Tottenham using Onomah – either on loan or even permanently – in a bid to land Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish would make perfect sense, with Spurs attempting to drive the price down, and sending Onomah back to Villa Park may just do that.

There is also the possibility that Onomah is injured without the club confirming it, given that he also missed the friendlies against Southend United and Brentford without explanation, and an ongoing issue may just explain his omission.

The next week should give a better indication on Onomah’s future, as confirmation of an injury could even rule him out of Grealish negotiations – but few would be surprised to see him being included in a deal for the Villa star, given that Onomah hasn’t been able to really break through under Pochettino so far.
