Some Derby County fans have taken to social networking site Twitter to point out the irony at Stoke City reportedly wanting to sign Huddersfield Town’s Tom Ince after boss Gary Rowett sold him 12 months ago.
According to a report in The Sun, Stoke boss Rowett wants the former Pride Park man to replace Xherdan Shaqiri at the Bet365 Stadium with Huddersfield holding out for a £10 million fee.
It’s interesting that Rowett would consider a move for Ince considering he sold the player to the Terriers only 12 months ago while in charge of the Rams.
Ince had a terrific campaign at Pride Park, scoring 14 Championship goals and grabbing a further six assists in 41 league starts for a side which ultimately finished outside the playoffs.
The majority of Ince’s goals came under former boss Steve McClaren, and it appeared he didn’t really fit into Rowett’s style with a preference of having hardworking runners in wide areas rather than creative ball-players.
Rowett ultimately sold the 26-year-old to Huddersfield, as well as selling Will Hughes to Watford, and replaced them with the likes of Tom Huddlestone, Curtis Davies and Tom Lawrence.
Derby fans won’t forgive Rowett in a hurry for selling off their better players and leaving at the first opportunity of a more lucrative offer elsewhere, and now Stoke’s reported move for Ince only makes it worse.
There is a huge irony in Rowett selling the player at Derby as he didn’t really fit into his plans only to move in for him 12 months later as he bids to replace the Potters’ most creative player Shaqiri.
Tom Ince class at Championship level, however can’t see him being a roaring success under defensive minded Rowett. Rarely likes to track back and if Rowett’s has a similar effect on Ince like he did Lawrence last year he’ll not hit the heights we know he can hit #dcfc #dcfcfans— Stair 35 (@Stair35dcfc) July 19, 2018
So funny, Rowett gets rid of him, makes #dcfc a few quid. Loses out on Mount and Wilson to #dcfc so in desperation goes back and wastes money on Ince!!! Just wonder if the rams included a sell on clause as well! Thanks Rowett!— David (@dawalthall) July 18, 2018
Don't for a second get #DCFCfans slating Tom Ince. Had his off days, yes, but was far more hit than miss! Scored some very important goals for us. I'd've had him back, always thought the Huddersfield move was an odd one. Will do bits at Stoke #DCFC— NickyB (@BirchyN85) July 19, 2018
Incey was good at derby, don’t get the negativity, he scored and assisted in about 30 goals in his last season , Johnny Russell about 5, yet Johnny was revered! I would take ince every time performance over effort #dcfc #dcfcfans— chris walsh (@onechriswalsh) July 19, 2018

I may be wrong, but I just can’t see Tom Ince succeeding at Stoke under Rowetts negative tactics. He only ever performed under Steve McClaren. Currently only 5 goals scored in last 52 games. #DCFC #SCFC #HTAFC— Shane Malpass (@ShaneMalpass) July 19, 2018
