Everton have today confirmed on their official website that midfielder Alex Denny has signed a new contract with the club, ruling out a potential move to Rangers.

The Toffees are attempting to make moves in the transfer market having so far failed to bring in any new faces, but today they have announced a deal for one of their youngsters.

Midfielder Denny has penned a new contract until the summer of 2020, giving him time to develop at Goodison Park having already been on the fringes of the first team.

The 18-year-old has come up through the ranks with Everton, and came on as a substitute in a Europa League game against Apollon Limassol back in December.

Denny has represented England at youth level and will now look to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jonjoe Kenny, Beni Baningime and Tom Davies in stepping up to the first team more often.

The new deal also rules out any move to Rangers, as the Liverpool Echo reported in May that Steven Gerrard was looking to pounce by bringing Denny to Ibrox.

General view as the inside of Goodison Park is seen prior to the Premier League match between Everton and Watford at Goodison Park on November 5, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

A role in the development squad may have been imminent for Denny anyway, but it’s fair to say that the last think Gerrard really needs is another midfielder.

Gerrard already has Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, Jordan Rossiter, Greg Docherty, Graeme Dorrans, Lassana Coulibaly, Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Andy Halliday at his disposal, meaning Denny wouldn’t have had many first-team opportunities – and he may have felt that staying with Everton was the best thing for his development.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.
