Rangers are still looking to bring another defender to Ibrox this summer.

Rangers are in the market for another defender having allowed Bruno Alves to join Italian side Parma, but their pursuit isn’t quite going as they wanted.

The Gers have already landed Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, but with Alves, David Bates and Russell Martin all gone from the end of last season and Fabio Cardoso unwanted, Rangers remain short at the back.

Rangers are attempting to land Millwall’s Jake Cooper according to reports, but The Scottish Sun report that the Lions have so far ignored the Gers’ £3million bid for the centre back.

Boss Steven Gerrard may move on to other targets, and given claims that Rangers are looking for a left-sided centre back, they should be considering a Scottish international.

One of the top defenders in the Scottish Premiership is Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna, and he certainly fits the bill for Rangers – if they can convince their rivals to sell this summer.

At 22, McKenna has the potential to develop that Rangers are seeking, whilst he is big and strong at 6ft 2in, and is left-footed, which is seemingly important for how Gerrard wants to balance his defence.

The Scottish Sun report that Swansea City are lining up a £2million bid for McKenna, a full £1million shy of Rangers’ bid for Cooper, meaning he fits into a similar price range as Rangers’ top target.

Aberdeen may be reluctant to sell, but given that Katic is new to Scottish football having arrived from Croatia, having a proven Scottish Premiership defender like McKenna would certainly help – and if Millwall don’t respond to the Cooper bid soon, Rangers should be testing the water with a move for McKenna.
