Everton have joined Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the race for Boca Juniors defensive midfielder Wilmar Barrios, according to TyC Sport.

It has been reported that Tottenham and Chelsea were already interested in the 24-year-old defensive midfielder, and now Premier League rivals Everton are claimed to have joined the race for the Colombia international.

The Merseyside outfit are reportedly closely following Barrios, who is claimed to have a release clause of €18 million (£15.9m) and will stay at Boca until December 2018.

Good long-term planning

While Everton may not be able to secure the services of Barrios in the summer transfer window, it is quite smart of the Toffees to look at the Colombia international for the next window.

The 24-year-old did well for Colombia at the World Cup in Russia, and there is certainly potential in the defensive midfielder.

A transfer fee of £15.9m would be a bargain for Everton, although one could ask whether the Toffees do need to sign another midfielder given that they are quite well-stocked in that particular department.
