You can’t blame Danny Drinkwater for wanting to seize what could have been his last chance to sign for a real giant of a club, to play Champions League football and fight for domestic silverware.
But Drinkwater’s dream move to Chelsea quickly turned into a nightmare. Just two years after winning the Premier League with Leicester City, the 28-year-old started just five games for the Stamford Bridge outfit and could hardly have been further away from England’s World Cup squad.
And reports in The Mail recently claimed that Chelsea are now keen to cash in on the former Manchester United man this summer, just one year after paying £30million for him.
Surprisingly, however, there hasn’t been a lot of speculation about a player who was seen almost as N’Golo Kante’s equal two summers ago. West Ham were linked back in April via The Telegraph but now appear to be targeting other midfielders with Drinkwater slipping out of the gossip columns.
But it seems that the three-time England international would be welcomed at Newcastle United – at least by some supporters.
Drinkwater combines relentless work rate with excellent distribution, making him a perfect fit on paper for a Rafa Benitez midfield. He alongside Jonjo Shelvey or Ki Sung-Yueng would give Newcastle more than enough quality to challenge for another top 10 finish.
But if the deal was to happen, Chelsea would surely have to be willing to accept a massive loss on their £30 million man.

Great signing if we get him— Gav (@Gav83016723) July 11, 2018
Would be a great midfield— Chimpy (@chimpy1881) July 11, 2018
I'd take him. 4 good options in cm then. Can't see it unless it's at a very knocked down price. Other priorities way ahead of that.— Simon (@LittleHenryD) July 11, 2018
I'd have him— Pete Smith (@Petesmith84) July 10, 2018
Drinkwater would be good. With Saivet & merino going.— Jay (@NufcJay18) July 9, 2018
