Fernandes may not yet have proven to be a standout Premier League player, but he does have a considerable amount of potential.
The 22-year-old midfielder has shown flashes of genuine quality, and his all-action style means he could slot in to a number of positions.
West Ham’s previous boss, Slaven Bilic, was a huge fan of Fernandes, and suggested that he had the potential to become a star at the London Stadium.
He said to Sky Sports: “I like him. We bought him and he’s very young. He can play everywhere and he has every chance to be special in the future if he changes a little bit, he needs to work more. He has the pace, skill and the strike. He defends very well too. He has every chance.”
Bilic’s comments show that getting rid of Fernandes could turn out to be a decision which backfires for West Ham.
The Swiss midfielder may not yet be the finished article, but if he does fulfil his potential then there is little doubting that he would be an asset to almost every side.
And West Ham will be hoping that Fernandes doesn’t make them live to regret letting him go, if he does depart this summer.
