Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has suggested to BT Sport, during their live broadcast of the Europa League, that his predecessor, Graeme Murty, could have destroyed Ross McCrorie’s career.

McCrorie was tasked with playing at centre-back on regular occasions for Rangers last season, when he did not always look comfortable.

Pedro Caixinha was the first of the Ibrox side’s bosses to test McCrorie out at centre-back, but McCrorie was also tasked with playing in the heart of Rangers’ defence under Murty.

Ross McCrorie of Rangers walks off after being sent off during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Murty throw McCrorie in at centre-back in the Scottish Cup semi-final, when Rangers were hammered by Celtic.

And Gerrard was really unhappy to see McCrorie being played out of position for Rangers so often last term.

He said: “You look at the centre back position when we came in… we had a player playing at centre-back position, that wasn’t his real position, he was thrown in at the deep end. He could have been easily destroyed in terms of career wise. We felt that decision was careless.”

Ross McCrorie of Rangers vies with Jack Aitchison of Celtic during The Scottish FA Youth Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden Park on April 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

McCrorie started Gerrard’s first game in charge at Rangers last night, but in a defensive midfield role.

Rangers got off to a winning start under their new manager’s stewardship, after winning 2-0 against Shkupi in front of a sell-out Ibrox crowd.
