Nottingham Forest reportedly made a bid to sign Aitor Karanka's former Middlesbrough defender Fabio da Silva, who is now set for Ligue 1 outfit Nantes.

Nottingham Forest have enjoyed a simply superb transfer window so far but there is one nagging problem. The Championship promotion hopefuls are still lacking a left-back.

Armand Traore is set to leave while Juan Fuentes is still sidelined with a broken leg, meaning that the left side of defence is one position where Forest look very weak as things stand. And it seems that they are now set to miss out on a player who appeared to be on his way to the City Ground to fill a void in Aitor Karanka’s squad.

The Nottingham Post claimed in June that Karanka was looking to raid former club Middlesbrough to re-sign Fabio da Silva, who the Spaniard brought to the Riverside from Cardiff for £2 million in 2016.

It was understood that Forest were hopeful that a deal was close to fruition while the Northern Echo claimed a £300,000 bid had been rejected. But, in a blow to Forest’s plans, it seems that Fabio is now set to follow his twin brother Rafael to France.

According to Ouest France, the former Manchester United youngster is closing in on a move to Ligue 1 side Nantes, who have comfortably outbid their East Midland counterparts by offering £1.7 million.

It is understood that Fabio will sign a three-year contract with a side who finished last season in ninth place under the now departed Claudio Ranieri. Forest, then, will have to start from scratch again.
