Domagoj Vida could well be playing his football on Merseyside next season.
Just six months after moving to Besiktas on a free transfer from Dinamo Kiev, the 29-year-old is suddenly one of the most in-demand centre-backs in European football on the back of his brilliant performances for World Cup finalists Croatia.
Fanatik reported on Thursday that Liverpool had made raised their bid to £17.5 million for Vida, who was arguably the best player on the pitch as Zlatko Delic’s side outclassed England in the semi-final on Wednesday night.
And now Everton are making their move, too.
The Toffees have been linked with the versatile defender for longer than their local rivals. Sabah claimed in late June, well before Croatia had emerged as genuine candidates to win the entire tournament, that Everton had bid £11.2 million.
And, with Liverpool stepping up their pursuit, new claims from Sabah suggest Everton are doing the same.
It is understood that that Everton have now requested a meeting with Besiktas in order to speak about potentially singing the uncompromising Vida. It is likely that they will be told to raise their offer significantly with the 2017 Super Lig champions wanting around £30 million.
