Coulibaly only signed for Rangers on loan move from Angers earlier this week, but Gerrard feels he is a different option to what he already has at Ibrox.
Coulibaly loves a physical battle, and Gerrard believes the 22-year-old’s battling qualities could be key for Rangers in the upcoming season.
“Lassana is a very different midfield player in the destroyer mode who is very powerful, aggressive, who will snap about and win tackles for us and break it up and use the ball intelligently,” Gerrard said.
“He’s got good experience in the French League. He’s mixed it with the best in that league and we believe he will be an important player for us.”
Rangers already have a wealth of central midfielders at the club, so it may be up to Gerrard to offload some of his current options now.
The likes of Andy Halliday, Jason Holt and Greg Docherty could all be candidates to leave Ibrox, either on loan or permanently.
Rangers have been extremely active in the transfer window so far, bringing in nine new players to help strengthen Gerrard’s options.
The likes of Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have both been added to Rangers squad, alongside Coulibaly, to add competition for places in the midfield area.
