The last thing Leeds United fans want is another Felix Wiedwald. But that might be exactly what they’re reportedly looking at.
According to AS Argentina, Leeds are interested in signing the 22-year-old River Plate goalkeeper Augusto Batalla. But it seems that the former Argentine U20 international is not the ‘safe pair of hands’ that Leeds were looking for when targeting the likes of Angus Gunn and David Stockdale.
Batalla, should the deal come off, will arrive at Elland Road with a reputation for mistakes – quite like Wieldwald when he joined from Werder Bremen last summer after conceding 13 goals in his final three Bundesliga games for the club.
Batalla was made River Plate’s first-choice goalkeeper at the tender age of 20 back in 2016 and helped one of South America’s most historic clubs win the Copa Argentina and the Recopa Sudamericana.
But the romance didn’t last long. Once veteran German Lux arrived from Deportivo in 2017, Batalla lost his place. A few months later, he fell to third choice in the pecking order once Argentine international Franco Armani arrived.
And it seems that a penchant for big mistakes was his downfall. In fact, there is even a five minute YouTube video entitled ‘The Worst Errors of Augusto Batalla’. Leeds fans should avert their gaze right about now.
