It was a tight affair, and the Belgian Red Devils were by no means outclassed; they just struggled to break down an extremely resolute French defence, with Umtiti and Raphael Varane putting in solid performances.
Les Bleus probably just about deserved to win the game, and Belgium will be disappointed to have come so close to finally winning a major trophy.
Eden Hazard was the standout performer for Roberto Martinez's side on the night, with the Chelsea star causing problems down the left.
Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele was brought back into the starting XI as part of a three-man midfield alongside Axel Witsel and Marouane Fellaini, but the 30-year-old appeared to struggle the most out of anyone throughout the game, and was hauled off after an hour to make way for Dries Mertens.
Dembele has been a force to be reckoned with for Tottenham over the past few seasons, but he has not had the best of World Cups, and became exposed against France.
The 2012 signing was linked last month with a move to Juventus and, on the basis of his showing in Russia, some Tottenham fans will not be too stung by his potential departure.
Have to be honest on this performance of Mousa Dembele versus France and when you also remember his FA Cup performance against Man United.— Ricky Sacks (@RickSpur) 10 July 2018
If the chance arises to replace the Belgian with a player like Kovacic, Rabiot or Ndombele we should be absolutely all over it.#THFC #COYS
Not sure we can afford to let him go Rick. We can’t get rid of Rose/Toby/Moussa in one summer, that’s 25% of our best XI. We should be adding to the squad, not depleting it.— Yidvids (@YidVids) 10 July 2018
I think Dembele is a great player. The only problem is he’s only able to perform at 100% for 2 months of the season. But when he does perform at 100% he’s fantastic.— Marc Benamram (@MarcBenamram) 10 July 2018
It's hard to admit because I love moussa but he's declining sadly— thomas spice (@spice2001) 10 July 2018
Really hard to accept but his body is aging faster with those injuries. Really sad he didn't make it to the final.— Tian-Shu Qin (@COYS_Qin) 10 July 2018
Kovacic— iJaxk (@iJaxks) 10 July 2018
He was good defensively but as a midfield outlet he was poor today . Getting dispossessed and not picking up pogba .— SpursTransfer10 (@SpursTransfer10) 10 July 2018
I think Dembele is an astounding player but he looked completely out of it today for sure.— Derrell Bradford (@Dyrnwyn) 10 July 2018
He didn’t play well today at all...— Jordan Bolds (@J_BoldsyEra67) 10 July 2018
He plays more like this than not these days; I wasn’t impressed at all last season bar the odd, and I do mean odd, great game. People seem to have overly high sentimentality where Dembele is concerned. Injury plagued, old and with one year left, no surprise he’s on the way out.— Niner Gang (@NinerFaithfulUK) 10 July 2018
It’s sad to see but I think his best is behind him and we do need to cash in— Jonathan McDonald (@jonathan_coys) 10 July 2018
