West Ham had been linked with a move for the Danish centre back.
West Ham reportedly face serious competition from Premier League rivals Southampton to sign Borussia Mochengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, but missing out on his signature could be a blessing in disguise due to the current options already in the squad.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are believed to be keen on the Denmark international, but Southampton are holding discussions over trying to agree a transfer fee.
Vestergaard is a 6ft 7in giant centre-back that could excel in English football due to his huge presence and reading of the game, something he has demonstrated at club and international level.
However, West Ham already have a number of solid options at centre-back going into the new season and Pellegrini should bin plans to bring in a new defender if it is going to block the path of rising star Declan Rice.
The Hammers saw how well the 19-year-old stepped up to the first team last season and he should be given another opportunity in the starting XI under Pellegrini.
Rice should be competing for a centre-back position going into next year alongside Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna and new signing Issa Diop, despite the fact he has the versatility to drop into midfield.
He is one of the best talents to come out of the academy in recent years and is definitely good enough to be a regular feature in the side.
