Wigan plan move for defender Mellor

Wigan Athletic are ready to push ahead with a move for former Blackpool defender Kelvin Mellor, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Mellor is a free agent after his contract with Blackpool expired at the end of June and he is now weighing up his options with a number of clubs chasing his signature.

Wigan have held a long-term interest in full-back Mellor and considered a move for the player during the January transfer window.

Latics boss Paul Cook has continued to keep tabs on Mellor and he sees him as a valuable addition to his squad as he prepares for life back in the Championship next season.

Mellor has impressed at Blackpool since joining the club on a free transfer from Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2016.

The attacking full-back helped Blackpool win promotion to League One in his first year at the club and was named in the PFA League Two team of the year.

Mellor continued his fine form last season chipping in with seven goals in 34 games for Blackpool to establish himself as one of the best right-backs in the Football League.

A number of clubs have been weighing up moves for Mellor, but Wigan are understood to be leading the race for his signature.
