Liverpool have been pursuing Lyon forward Nabil Fekir for most of the summer, but fans were given a major scare over the weekend when rivals Manchester United were linked.

The Champions League finalists have already secured one major signing this summer, bringing in Monaco midfielder Fabinho, whilst RB Leipzig's Naby Keita has arrived having agreed his move last summer.

Manager Jurgen Klopp remains keen on new faces though, and the main target for Liverpool has been Lyon forward Nabil Fekir in what became a real saga.

The Frenchman hit 23 goals in all competitions for Lyon last season, as the versatile forward – who can play up front, out wide or as a No. 10 – starred for his hometown club.

Liverpool made major moves to bring Fekir to the Premier League, and a deal looked to be imminent before Lyon pulled the plug, with the Reds attempting to renegotiate the fee involved due to concerns over his knee.

Fekir is still in Russia with the French national team at the World Cup, but he is likely to be in demand when he returns, with Liverpool potentially still having one eye on luring him to Anfield.

However, Lyon-based newspaper Le Progres reported over the weekend that with Liverpool's talks off, rivals Manchester United are now looking to swoop in and take Fekir to Old Trafford instead.

Reds fans have taken to Twitter in order to react, with many believing that the rumours are a ploy from Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas to tempt Liverpool back in with a bid of their own, though others desperately hope he doesn't head to United after all.
