Barry Ferguson has told The Scottish Sun that new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard can guide the Ibrox club to the group stage of the Europa League next season.

Rangers finished third in the Scottish Premiership table last season and will feature in Europa League first qualifying round.

It is going to be hard for the Gers to go through the qualifying rounds and book their spot in the group stage of the European competition, but former Rangers midfielder has stated that Liverpool legend Gerrard can guide the team to just there.

Ferguson told The Scottish Sun: “It’s important that Rangers are in the group stages. Last season was a disaster.

“The Progres defeat was an embarrassment, disastrous. Take nothing away from the team from Luxembourg, but Rangers should be beating them.

“It looked like Rangers didn’t want it as much as Progres. But I’m sure they’ll do it this year. I can sense a different mentality this time.”

Tough road ahead

Rangers will kick off their Europa League qualifying campaign against FK Shkupi this month, and although the Gers will be confident of winning that particular tie, things will get tougher from there on.

With Gerrard having made a number of signings already in the summer transfer window, the new-look Rangers team will need time to settle.

It is going to be hard for the Gers to go all the way to the group stage of the Europa League, and one should not be surprised if they fail to do so.
