Ahmed Musa’s two goals against Iceland in Friday’s World Cup game will surely have opened Leicester City’s minds going into next season as a player who has never lived up to expectations in the Premier League proved himself on the biggest stage.

Any doubts surrounding his ability to step up from Russia’s top flight to England’s can be put to rest on the back of this; with his country watching and expecting, with an enormous number of eyes on him, Musa put Iceland to the sword in a way that very few teams have managed.

Although the game may have played out differently, this came just days after Lionel Messi and Argentina struggled to bypass the Icelandic defence and so Musa’s performance can certainly be taken as an impressive achievement – and most importantly, proof of his potential.

The Nigerian was originally signed in the wake of Leicester’s Premier Leauge triumph and while that was always going to be impossible to follow, Musa didn’t live up to any expectations with only four goals in his debut season.

He barely played over the first half of his second season before he was loaned back to CSKA Moscow in January where he once again proved himself with seven goals in 16 appearances.

With Riyad Mahrez likely off and Jamie Vardy progressing further into his 30’s, perhaps it’s time to give Musa another shot; the 25-year-old has the athleticism for English football and, if a match-winning World Cup performance is anything to go by, he has the temperament for it, too – and if he’s got the tools, there’s still plenty of time for Leicester to mould him into something very useful indeed.
