Nicolai Jorgensen of Denmark celebrates victory during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group C match between Peru and Denmark at Mordovia Arena on June 16, 2018 in Saransk, Russia.

Denmark kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Peru in Saransk this evening, with Yussuf Poulsen bagging the only goal of the game.

The two sides had seen Group C rivals France see off Australia with a 2-1 victory earlier in the day, and then took to the field themselves to get their summer in Russia started.

In a fairly tight game, Peru did have the chance to go in front, as Yussuf Poulsen brought down Christian Cueva inside the penalty area, but the playmaker stepped up himself and blasted his penalty over the crossbar.

Peru couldn’t muster a chance that golden again, and were made to pay as Poulsen went from zero to hero, taking Christian Eriksen’s pass and slotting past Pedro Gallese.

Whilst Peru dominated the late exchanges, Denmark held strong and clinched their win, though manager Aage Hareide may well feel that his side were somewhat underwhelming in Saransk.

One player who didn’t quite impress was striker Nicolai Jorgensen, who led the line with little production at the end of it, and saw a golden chance blocked in the second half.

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle United fans took a keen interest in Jorgensen’s display, given that manager Rafael Benitez wanted to sign the Feyenoord hitman for £20million in the January transfer window, as reported by The Mirror.

Magpies supporters felt that their club have really dodged a bullet by not signing Jorgensen, suggesting that he looked like a ‘donkey’ and no better than current Newcastle striker Joselu, who struggled last season.
