Matej Vydra is seemingly on his way out of Derby County this summer; the Telegraph reporting that the £8 million record-signing could be sold with the Rams looking to slash the budget.
But replacing him could be Frank Lampard’s biggest task so far. Vydra was Derby’s star man last season after all, firing 21 goals to win the Championship Golden Boot and a place in the Team of the Season.
Derby fans, however, seem more than happy with suggestions that Peterborough United striker Jack Marriott could arrive at Pride Park in place of the influential Czech striker.
Marriott, who scored 33 goals in all competitions last season, has been linked with a number of clubs in the second tier, not to mention Celtic and Rangers. The 23-year-old had looked to be heading towards Nottingham Forest but, according to Peterborough’s director of football Barry Fry, bitter rivals Derby have suddenly emerged as a more likely destination.
“Jack does want to join Nottingham Forest but Derby’s interest is recent and I would say they have a better chance of making us the right sort of offer," Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph, with Marriott understood to be valued at around £6 million.
And it seems that the prospect of Marriott going to Derby would go down very well with the Pride Park faithful, and not just because it would leave Forest fans very frustrated.
Jack Marriott is exactly the type of player we should be looking at signing, 23 years old, scored 33 goals last season & if we can get around £15m for Matej, he’d definitely be worth a try at £6m.#dcfc#dcfcfans— Jack Hasler (@jackhasler23) June 14, 2018
I think they just said we’re interested and in pole position to make Forest bid. But if we are looking at him I’d happily take him, top player— Jack Thomas (@Jack_Thomas_12) June 14, 2018
Looks like a replacement for vydra.if we can get him for six mil and sell vydra for 16,I see it has good business #dcfcfans— lee degg (@doctordegg) June 14, 2018
Yes. His record suggests him a natural scorer. With a good target man alongside him he will get goals.— Steve Dolman (@Peakfanblog) June 14, 2018
Sign him this instant— lee roe (@roweydcfc) June 14, 2018
Proper goalscorer and has age firmly on his side. £6.5 million would be a steal.— Ryan Burton (@RyanBurton92) June 14, 2018
Marriott signing for us will depend entirely on if we strike a good price on Vydra early doors as other Champ clubs in better financial positions are sniffing round already.
6.5 is a decent price. Would be a class investment— Ryan O'Meara (@_omeara_r) June 14, 2018
I sense he is the kind of player we need to take a risk on and sign up— Michael Broadley (@BroadleyMichael) June 14, 2018
