The Nottingham Post reports Forest are working on a deal for the Scot, who spent time on loan at the City Ground at the start of the decade.
It is claimed Hutton will be offered a two-year contract to prise him away from Aston Villa, where he has reached the end of his deal.
Though it is at left-back where Hutton has played much of his recent football, the 33-year-old is a natural right-sider and seen by some as a potential replacement for Eric Lichaj - who has been strongly linked with a move to Hull City.
However, the Nottingham Forest faithful are somewhat undecided as to whether that's a good thing or not.
This is what they are saying...
We should keep eric . Why are we going for someone on high wages ??— lee workman (@leenffc79) 12 June 2018
People seriously moaning about us being interested in Hutton? Different level to Lichaj, huge upgrade. I really don't understand where some of these ppl get there opinions from. Baffling Need a nice mix of youth and experience. #nffc— Johno (@Johnnno90) 12 June 2018
Hutton is experienced and crucially is a better player than Lichaj, and he can play both right and left back. A 2 year deal looks good to me. #nffc— Ravi (@ForestRav) 12 June 2018
Alan Hutton is a solid signing on a free, says it all the a side who reached the play-offs last season are sad to see him depart. An upgrade on Lichaj IMO. #NFFC— Lee Clarke (@Clarkey_No1) 12 June 2018
Don’t rate Lichaj (great guy tho) but he’s better than Hutton. Especially with the difference in wages. Every time I watch Villa Hutton is at fault for the goals they let in. #nffc— Shaun Brewster (@BigDavoNFFC) 12 June 2018
Lichaj told he can leave, now we’re looking to bring Hutton in? That’s not a great move in my eyes, but what do I know? #nffc— J-E-T-H-R-O (@JethroFairley) 12 June 2018
Don't get the rave with Hutton, would rather keep lichaj #nffc— Matthew Brewis (@Matt_Brewis) 12 June 2018
What I will say, is that Hutton is very much an upgrade on Lichaj. Just a bit concerned his legs are going #nffc— Christian Brown (@Chris78901) 12 June 2018
I’ll praise the great signings and I’ll slate the bad ones.— East Midland Reds © (@IlkestonRed) 12 June 2018
Alan Hutton in my opinion is a huge step backwards. #nffc
Hutton for Lichaj not a great signing probably want more money he must be 34 past his best no better than Lichaj not a step forward— John Moody (@johnthered52) 12 June 2018
Hutton a great signing on a free, experienced, offers good competition at RB and IMO an upgrade on Lichaj #NFFC— Gareth D (@GarethJD81) 12 June 2018
Should Hutton fail to renew his contract, he would be the latest player to leave Aston Villa following last month's Wembley failure.
John Terry, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Christopher Samba are among those who have already departed Villa Park at the end of their deals, as the Villans attempt to balance the books.
