Islam Slimani’s short-lived spell at Newcastle United will be remembered for suspensions and injuries rather than goals.
The Algerian failed to score in just four appearances for the Magpies since joining from Leicester City on loan in the January transfer window. Needless to say, his hopes of a permanent move to St James’ Park quickly disappeared.
But Rafa Benitez still appears keen to bring a strong, powerful target man to St James’ Park in the summer after telling the Independent that he wants the club to break their 13-year-old transfer record for a goal-scorer.
The likes of Nicolai Jorgensen and Karl Toko-Ekambi fit the bill but it remains something of a surprise that Salomon Rondon so far has not entered the discussion.
But while Rondon has been far from prolific in his three years at West Brom, scoring 24 league goals in 108 games, he could be the influential number nine that Slimani was supposed to be.
With pinpoint deliveries provided by the likes of Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey, Rondon would surely find goals easier to come by at Newcastle than he did with the Baggies.
And £16 million surely puts him within Newcastle’s budget.
I’d take Rondon and Matty Phillips— NUFC1892 (@TOONANDY1986) June 1, 2018
Rondon for sure.— Tony Seaward (@seawardt) May 31, 2018

I'd hope the club would do anything they could to buy Rondon, Bertrand & Mawson #NUFC— Ben Broad (@JarnyBen) May 31, 2018
I would take Rondon since he had a good season with West Brom and at Newcastle he could play a role in the squad along Dwight Gayle and he might also score a couple of goals. https://t.co/1XdGxwHBih— Sam Harrison (@SH_4638) May 31, 2018
Rondon that’s it— Chris Cossey (@Cosseycj) May 31, 2018
