Rangers are interested in signing former Aston Villa and West Ham United defender James Collins in the summer transfer window, according to The Scottish Sun.

It has been reported that new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is tracking the ex-Wales international central defender after admitting defeat in his quest to sign his former Liverpool teammate Martin Skrtel from Fenerbahce this summer.

Collins, who will leave West Ham this summer after his contract with the Premier league club runs out, could reportedly be tempted to move to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Good signing for Rangers?

Collins, 34, has been brilliant in the Premier League and did not exactly have a bad season on a personal level for West Ham in 2017-18.

While some Rangers fans will be concerned by the Welshman’s age - he will be 35 in August - there is no doubt over his quality, and the former Villa centre-back, who earns £35,000 per week as salary according to The Daily Star, would also bring a wealth of experience to the Gers’ team.

Signing Collins, who featured for Wales at the Euro 2016 finals, on a free transfer would not be a bad idea for Rangers, who will be aiming to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.
