Liverpool may be busy preparing for this weekend's Champions League final against Real Madrid, but that hasn't stopped the transfer rumour mill from churning.
The Reds have already tied up one deal as Naby Keita will finally arrive from RB Leizpig almost a year since agreeing his move, but manager Jurgen Klopp will want new signings no matter how the Champions League final pans out.
Despite landing Virgil van Dijk in January, another centre back may be targeted, given that Ragnar Klavan, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren continue to exhibit inconsistency.
Now, The Independent report that Klopp has two targets in mind, with Newcastle United's Jamaal Lascelles and Burnley's James Tarkowski allegedly wanted by the Reds.
The two English centre backs have impressed this season, with both players unlucky to have been left out of the England squad for this summer's World Cup squad.
However, Liverpool fans don't seem to be sold on Burnley ace Tarkowski, despite the 25-year-old thriving under Sean Dyche in a superb season at Turf Moor.
Many fans took to Twitter to say that they aren't convinced by Tarkowski's ability to play for a top club, with some fearing that he would suffer similar struggles to former teammate Michael Keane upon leaving Burnley, as he has struggled with Liverpool's rivals Everton.
Some are willing to trust Klopp after his deal for Andrew Robertson last summer paid dividends, but many would prefer to sign Lascelles if Liverpool were faced with such a decision this summer.
I’ll back all of Klopp’s signings but Butland & Tarkowski are really pushing it— (@StudgeIsMyMate) May 21, 2018
I would prefer Lascelles over Tarkowski.— Aprajit (@Wazzzir) May 21, 2018
Lascelles over Tarkowski for me. Top player and leader. Plus, it would be a lot easier deal (if Rafa could push a bit). Tarkowski has had a fabulous season, but that's largely owing to Dyche and his excellent defensive set up (with all due respect to Tarkowski, great player)#LFC https://t.co/WISkHp1BDf— Heavy Metal Football (@brutalpool) May 21, 2018
Shame after so long under Klopp people still complain about potential targets because they aren't considered world-class or play for top clubs. Tarkowski and Lascelles are perfect examples. Neither play for top sides but are very good defenders and if wanted by Klopp would excel.— Dan McLaughlin (@Dan23_92) May 21, 2018
Tarkowski or Lascelles you say? Don't mind either— Jonny (@AStrokeOfGinius) May 21, 2018
Reach a UCL final and we want to sign the likes of Butland, Tarkowski and Lascelles. It’s a mystery why we don’t win league titles, it really is. https://t.co/q7z78vqUSU— James (@BobbyF9_) May 21, 2018
Tarkowski would just end up like Micheal Keane, Lascelles is far batter— . (@FutbolAJ) May 21, 2018
Tarkowski looks good in Burnley system like Keane looked good last year.— Prannoy Roy (@PRANNOYROY6) May 21, 2018
I know Robertson turned out a gem but we should be aiming for a top class centre back to partner Van Djik, not Lascelles and Tarkowski who are no better than him. Another full season with Lovren would be a nightmare.— Kris (@KrisGourlay01) May 21, 2018
Ive said it before and I’ll say it again; James Tarkowski would be a very good signing imo— • (@TrentPingsIt) May 21, 2018
Would love lacelles not convinced about tarkowski Burnley sold a few players at big prices and they’ve all been useless elsewhere— dean regan (@Deanregan86) May 21, 2018
