Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has thanked fans for their unwavering support as the Toon finished in a lofty tenth place in the Premier League table this season - and fans reacted in delight to his Tweet.

The 32-year-old made 16 appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle, as Rafa Benitez produced a near-miracle to push the Toon into the top half of the table with relegation a real concern at the halfway stage.

Elliot has failed to feature for the Toon in the Premier League since December, though, following the signing of Martin Dubravka and he described his game time in the Tweet as a "season of two halves".

But he did state that he wants to remain with the club "in any way" he can, as competition for a place between the sticks remains rife at St. James' Park.

With Dubravka considered number one and expected to sign a permanent deal to join the Toon from Sparta Prague, Elliot is fighting the likes of Karl Darlow, Matz Sels and Freddie Woodman, while Newcastle have also been linked elsewhere.

Elliot is contracted at Newcastle until the end of the 2019-20 season in a deal the Daily Star claim is worth £25,000 a week and although he remains loyal in his Tweet, he may look for a new home this summer to gain first-team football.

Newcastle fans reacted to his Tweet, with one fan posting "hope you stay".
