Scottish Premiership giants lost out to Championship outfit Sheffield United last summer when defender Ben Heneghan left Motherwell.

Earlier this week, Rangers’ 2017 target Ben Heneghan brought the curtain down on a disastrous first season at Sheffield United.

Sky Sports stated that the Light Blues were keen to take the highly-rated centre-back to Ibrox after a fine spell at Motherwell. But Heneghan joined Sheffield United instead and promptly failed to make a single Championship appearance across the entire 2017/18 campaign.

In fact, his only appearance for the Blades in all competitions was a FA Cup clash against Preston North End. And now, the Sheffield Star has suggested that this forgettable January encounter, which the Blades won 1-0, could be Heneghan’s only outing for the Steel City side.

Because the former Chester prospect is one of seven Sheffield United players who have been made available for transfer this summer, along with the likes of James Hanson and Caolon Lavery.

And this should see Rangers renew their interest, with director of football Mark Allen needing to bring in defensive reinforcements this summer.

According to the Sun, Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso are set to be sold while Russell Martin will return to Norwich City. David Bates, arguably Rangers’ best defender this season, has already agreed a move to Hamburg.

And news that Heneghan will be available this summer should encourage Rangers to make a bid for a player who, in hindsight, might wish he had joined them 12 months ago.

Heneghan is a talented young defender with vast potential and re-sale value. He is also proven in the top flight of Scottish football so, if you are a Rangers fan, what is not to like?
