Wayne Rooney’s second spell back at Goodison Park could end after just one year.
It is understood that DC United have been in talks with Rooney for a number of weeks and the discussions have now accelerated with the summer transfer window on the horizon. Interestingly, the Black and Reds tried to lure the Everton front man to the Audi Field last year but the pull of an emotional return to Merseyside proved too strong.
The Post adds that DC United have one of the MLS’s smallest budgets but are attempting to sign a marquee player this summer with Javier Hernandez, Carlos Tevez and even Mario Balotelli under consideration.
But a deal for Rooney appears the most likely.
Rooney has scored ten Premier League goals for Everton since his move from Manchester United last summer, but the Mail believes that he is growing frustrated with an increasingly bit-part role on Merseyside.
He was visibly annoyed when manager Sam Allardyce subbed him off on the hour of the goalless draw with Liverpool in early April, the former England boss then insinuating after the game that Rooney no longer has the legs to perform against top level opposition.
The Post adds that Rooney has a year left on his contract and his market value is understood to be around £12.5 million.
