Everton and Newcastle United were each credited with interest in the Middlesbrough captain last year.

Ben Gibson of Middlesbrough wears a face mask during the Sky Bet Championship match between Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough at City Ground on August 19, 2017 in Nottingham, England.

Bookmaker Bet Victor has opened a market on Ben Gibson’s next club, and made Everton and Newcastle United 6/1 favourites to sign the Middlesbrough defender – alongside Leicester City.

Everton, Newcastle and Leicester have all been linked with moves for Gibson over the past 12 months, although of those it is the Foxes who were most recently credited with interest in the 25-year-old, during January’s transfer window.

And the trio will perhaps be keeping a close eye on Middlesbrough’s fortunes, with Tony Pulis’s side set to encounter the lottery that is the Championship play-offs.

Despite Gibson’s affection for the Teesside club – whose chairman, Steve Gibson, is his uncle – the Boro academy product is unlikely to fancy another season outside of the Premier League, having made it on to England’s radar this time last year.

In that case, a move to Newcastle would be the most appealing geographically – albeit the least popular from a Middlesbrough perspective – although it is Everton and Leicester who are arguably the most in need of reinforcements in Gibson’s position.

The Middlesbrough native is unlikely to come cheap if he does move on, however, with four years still to run on his contract at the Riverside Stadium.

Would Gibson be a good addition for Everton / Newcastle United?
