Tottenham Hotspur will extend Erik Lamela’s contract, according to a report.

According to The Independent, Tottenham Hotspur will offer Erik Lamela a new contract.

The Argentine winger is out of contract in North London at the end of next season but The Independent reports that Tottenham will trigger a one-year extension.

Lamela, who joined Spurs for £27 million in 2013, will be contracted to the Lilywhites until the end of the 2019-20 season, if the extension is finalised.

The former Roma star has been often linked with a return to Italy but if Tottenham trigger the extension then it would surely indicate that his compatriot Mauricio Pochettino plans on keeping him around a while longer.

He is yet to score in 21 Premier League games this season – only five have been starts – since returning from a year-long absence with a hip injury.

The arrival of Lucas Moura in January, coupled with Son Heung-min’s brilliant form, has seen the 26-year-old struggle for first-team football and it remains to be seen how fans of the North London club react to his potential stay at Tottenham.

Lamela has long been a divisive figure among Spurs supporters, and two assists in the Premier League this season is unlikely to cause many of his detractors to change their stance.
