Spurs tried and failed to bring Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira to the Premier League last summer but are once again targeting the Portuguese ace.

Not for the first time this season, Serge Aurier gave away a clumsy, needless penalty and cost Tottenham Hotspur dear.

The former PSG right-back has endured a mixed debut season in English football and, after clattering into Jose Izquierdo to gift Brighton an equaliser from the spot in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at The Amex, he did little to quell suggestions that he is becoming something of a liability in defence.

Aurier, after all, had made almost carbon-copy mistakes in huge Champions League clashes against both Real Madrid and Juventus.

So reports in O Jogo that Tottenham sent scouts to watch Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira during their crucial 1-0 win away to title rivals Benfica are very interesting indeed.

According to O Jogo, Spurs saw a bid of £13.2 million for Ricardo rejected last summer after the Portuguese international had enjoyed an excellent season on loan at Ligue 1 side Nice, who qualified for the Champions League.

And it seems that a new offer for Ricardo could be on the way, with the Portuguese press claiming that Spurs had representatives at the Estadio Da Luz on Sunday to watch the versatile 24-year-old.

Ricardo has started 23 league games this season and can play on the right, the left or even in defensive midfield.

So now would be a good time for Aurier to stop giving away spot-kicks.
