In today’s vastly inflated transfer market, the fee that Ajax are reportedly demanding for Brazilian winger David Neres is strangely low.
The Eredivisie giants certainly raised eyebrows when they invested £10 million on the little-known Sao Paulo talent in January 2017, making him the second most expensive player in the club’s illustrious history.
But that risk has reaped plentiful rewards. Neres has been a revelation at the Amsterdam Arena, contributing to 21 goals in 26 league starts for Ajax this season (11 goals, 10 assists).
The report claims that Milan giants Inter and AC are going head-to-head to sign Neres, with the Nerazzurri possibly looking for replacements for the once again in-demand Croatian speedster Ivan Perisic.
But expect Tottenham Hotspur to be at the front of the queue, too. Spurs have raided Ajax for Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez already and Goal claimed back in February that Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the aggressive, dynamic Neres too.
Tottenham do not have the kind of disposable cash that the Manchester giants can throw around in the transfer market, but Ajax’s £26 million fee definitely puts Neres within their grasp. It remains to be seen whether the North London club will seize this opportunity.
