Newcastle United’s task of signing Johann Berg Gudmundsson from Burnley in the summer may have just become even harder.

The Sun have reported how Newcastle have made the £20m-rated Icelandic international one of their top transfer targets.

However, Newcastle do not have a clean run to sign Gudmundsson, with Leicester City also keen, and that makes things complicated.

According to the Leicester Mercury, Claude Puel will be given a large transfer budget to spend in the summer.

Leicester City are looking to invest, so they should have no problem meeting Burnley’s asking price for Gudmundsson.

And if Leicester do come in for Gudmundsson, that could push the price out of Newcastle’s reach.

Johann Gudmundsson of Burnley warms up prior to the Premier League match between Burnley and Southampton at Turf Moor on February 24, 2018 in Burnley, England.

The Magpies have never been heavy spenders during Mike Ashley’s time in charge, and Rafael Benitez has certainly been restricted in how much he has been able to spend.

Newcastle’s lack of investment has caused frustration, and their failure to land reported first choice targets could be set to continue, if Leicester come in for Gudmundsson.
