Better than Lemar? Liverpool should move for Monaco's Rony Lopes instead

Instead of Thomas Lemar, Liverpool should consider his in-form Monaco teammate Rony Lopes instead.

Liverpool were earlier this month linked again with a big money move for Monaco forward Thomas Lemar.

The Mail reported Monaco are holding out for £88 million offer.

So the Reds would be smart to consider an alternative... who also plays for Monaco.

Far less heralded forward Rony Lopes is enjoying the best season of his blossoming career, and has outscored Lemar.

Lopes is Monaco's second highest scorer this season behind Falcao, with nine goals in Ligue 1.

Lemar has scored just two league goals, providing seven assists. Lopes fairs well enough in this regard too, with four assists to his name.

Both players are only 22-years-old, and Lopes would be available at a cheaper price, and with a Premier League education under his belt already.

Lopes was let go by Manchester City in 2015, two years after making his debut for the club.

Rony Lopes of Manchester City warms up during a Manchester City training session at AAMI Park on July 20, 2015 in Melbourne, Australia.

He was City's brightest youth prospect but could not force his way through, and their signing of Raheem Sterling for £49 million that summer perhaps proved the last straw.

Lopes bears no ill will towards City, and needed to leave to kick start his career. This week he even told RMC Sport he would be open to a return to the club, and fans would love to have him back.

But this should not exclude Liverpool from trying to sign Lopes, especially with The Telegraph reporting this week that City are planning to target Lemar.

Liverpool would be smart to snap up Lopes instead, who can play across the front line and be their replacement for Coutinho.
