The world’s most expensive goalkeeper looks likely to be plying his trade at Anfield next season.
But it may not be Roma’s Brazilian shot-stopper Alisson Becker. According to The Mirror, Liverpool have decided that they want a goalkeeper with Premier League experience between the sticks – and will go all out for Stoke City’s Jack Butland instead.
It is understood that Liverpool are confident of sealing a deal for the England international, who would cost around £40 million – slightly more than Manchester City paid for Ederson last summer.
Arsenal are also keen with veteran number one Petr Cech seemingly in decline, but it is believed that Butland would rather move to Anfield and work under Jurgen Klopp rather than the under-fire Arsene Wenger.
Perhaps understandably, however, Liverpool fans are questioning the logic of choosing a goalkeeper with Premier League experience on his CV over a genuinely world-class, and far superior, glovesman in the shape of Alisson.
The former Internacional goalkeeper is one of the best around and, with Mo Salah taking England by storm after arriving from Roma last summer, it seems the fans would be keen for Liverpool to raid the Italian giants again.
Butland is a solid and improving goalkeeper. But Liverpool appear to be one top-draw shot-stopper away from being a genuine title contender - so if Alisson is available it makes little sense to look elsewhere.
Here's what Liverpool fans have been saying:

Henry has decided to go for the cheaper option ie butland with average ability , than go for a top quality keeper like Allison who will cost more, & damage Henry net Spend
Henry remind us all again how much EPL experience salah had
As someone who has watched a lot of both I can safely say he is miles and miles and miles behind— Luke (@ForzaLuke_) March 11, 2018
Apparently we’re going for Jack Butland over Alisson Becker because Butland is Premier League proven. That’s funny considering we’re the club that signed Mo Salah who was a flop and he’s the best player in the league right now.— Wavy Firmino (@TheLiverpoolEra) March 11, 2018
20 mill more and you get a world class keeper— kal (@Darmianology) March 11, 2018
that’s so disappointing if we do— Aid (@Aiidannnn) March 11, 2018
Telling you all if we sign Butland over Brazils number one Alisson then that transfer committee is still very much alive— Dean (@drbelfc) March 10, 2018

40 million for Jack Butland is outrageous. It's either Alisson or Karius.— Yash shah (@YASH1798) March 11, 2018
It make no sense buying Butland when you got a better goalkeeper available in the name of Alisson. It will be a big mistake and don’t be full by the English media’s hype.— AL48 (@AL48C) March 11, 2018
