Exactly two weeks after he revealed George Hirst was back from exile and cleared to play for Sheffield Wednesday's first team - pending a bit of match practice - Jos Luhukay has now conceded the striker is not being considered for selection due to contractual reasons [via BBC Radio Sheffield].
Hirst had found himself frozen out by Wednesday - who excluded him from all matches at every level until 13 days ago - after he failed to sign a new contract at Hillsborough.
But hopes of a positive resolution being reached were boosted when the 19-year-old England youth international played and scored on his comeback for the Owls' Under-23s.
Those hopes have since been dashed, however, and Hirst - who was linked with moves to Premier League clubs earlier in the campaign - will almost certainly depart the club at which his father, David, achieved legendary status as a player in the late-80s to mid-90s.
In a season which has already seen them embarrassed by neighbours Sheffield United at Hillsborough, dispose of a manager now flourishing in the league above, announce £21 million losses and surrender promotion ambition for survival fear, it's fair to say Sheffield Wednesday fans aren't best pleased with the latest news coming out of Hillsborough.
But is it Hirst or Dejphon Chansiri, the Owls chairman, who is to blame for the current state of affairs? Here's what the fans are saying on Twitter...
Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face!!!— Trollolargh (@Trollolargh) 8 March 2018
What a stupid situation that is, we’re crying out for some depth in that department with the current injuries yet DC won’t let him play what a joke, surely the clubs interests & league status comes first.— Andrew Scholey (@Scoz1985) 8 March 2018
Then George Hirst is a fool tbh, all this wasted time when he could've signed a contract and been playing, earning his keep and proving how good he THINKS he is. Would've been in the team under Jos, but instead he's having a hissy fit.— Rich Hargreaves (@rkhargreaves) 8 March 2018
What we have is a chairman who runs our club with a dictators iron rod, look at the players Hirsty was keeping out of the England side and what wages they’ll be on at their clubs, can you really blame the lad for asking for somewhere near parity with them? Chansiri is that thick!— Jason Macdonald (@JMacSheffield) 8 March 2018
Now I've heard it all. What kind of bloody contract has he got? . Talk about players calling the shots nowadays— stuart joszko (@stuartjoszko) 8 March 2018
Why we putting all this hop on a player that has done nothing but made problems for himself and the team. Need to get bad eggs like this out of the club and set an example that throwing the dummy out of the pram isn’t the way to better yourself.— Nathan (@swfccoundie) 8 March 2018
FFS what is the club playing at....— dave sheld (@dizzy801) 8 March 2018
This club is a joke, don’t deserve what makes the club what it is, the fan base— Dean Missere (@DeanMissere) 8 March 2018
What on earth is going on down there? Get someone on the Board of Directors who understands football— David Hawley (@davidhawley439) 8 March 2018
He needs to sign ffs. If he moves away to a PL club - he's going to be way way down the pecking order.— George Wirral OWL (@Geohay_SWFC) 8 March 2018
We're skint - so he'll play every week here next season!
What the hell is that suppose to mean.... if he doesn't sign a contract to stay, he can't play?? That's ridiculous!! What is happening to our club!— Neil Dunne (@ndunne76) 8 March 2018
err- that’s not what Jos said a couple of weeks ago. He is being utterly let down by our farce of a club right now.— Ben Read (@BennyRead) 8 March 2018
Just in case we needed any evidence that this decision is coming from the very top of the club. The whole thing’s farcical.— Matt (@mj_hale) 8 March 2018
Just watch him rock up at the Lane in the Summer.
Funnily enough, that last one isn't alone in his thinking...
So he doesn't get injured for his dream move to dem blades?— Dirk Digby (@S18_Blade) 8 March 2018
What’s the odds on Chris Wilder signing George Hirst up and giving him his chance to shine? #twitterblades— The Undertaker (@Undertaker_John) 8 March 2018
Has Hirst played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday? Could he really sign for Sheffield United?
