One of the key players in Tottenham Hotspur’s remarkable comeback against Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening was Mousa Dembele.

The Belgium international was arguably Tottenham’s best player in the first half at Juventus Stadium in Turin and was also influential in the second period, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side came from two goals down to draw the first leg of the last-16 tie 2-2.

Chris Waddle was following the match for BBC Sport, and while the former Tottenham star was impressed with the performance of the 30-year-old, he has criticised the midfielder for not scoring enough goals.

Waddle told BBC Sport (21:52): “Mousa Dembele changes direction incredibly with the inside of his foot, outside of his foot, manipulates the ball well and has got a change of pace. He's strong - we know that.

“My only criticism is when he gets within 25 yards, pull the trigger, he's got a very good left foot. For me, he should be getting 10 goals a season.

“I know he plays a defensive role but he’s allowed to take the ball forward and he carries the ball well. He should be having shots and he doesn’t, he lays that ball off.”

Unfair criticism?

Dembele does not score too many goals - that is true. The Belgium international has yet to find the net in the Premier League this term and scored just once in the league last season.

The problem with Waddle’s criticism is that Dembele is not supposed to score goals; Spurs have players such as Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli for that.

The Belgian’s role is to control the midfield, and that he does very well indeed when he is fit and on song.
