HITC Sport understands Lincoln boss rejects Barnsley job.
Lincoln City boss Danny Cowley has turned down the chance to take over at managerless Barnsley, HITC Sport understands.
Cowley is understood to have been Barnsley's preferred choice to replace Paul Heckingbottom at Oakwell following Heckingbottom's sudden departure to Leeds United earlier this week.
However, HITC Sport understands Cowley has rejected Barnsley's overtures and plans to stay at Lincoln.
Cowley and his brother and assistant Nicky are regarded as one of the best young management teams in the country after impressing at Lincoln over the last 18 months.
They led the Imps to promotion back to League Two last year as they won the National League to return to the Football League after a six-year absence.
Lincoln also enjoyed a memorable run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season as they became the first non-League side in 103 years to reach the last eight of the competition.
Lincoln are two points off the League Two play-off places this term, with 16 games remaining and booked their place at Wembley for the Checkatrade Trophy final with victory over Chelsea's U21s in the semi-final in midweek.
Cowley did not want to leave Lincoln midway through the season as he wants to try and win promotion to League One this season.
It means Barnsley will now have to look elsewhere to bring in a new manager to succeed Heckingbottom.
