You would probably struggle to find two people who agree on Alex Song.
The midfielder is a player of immense natural ability who shone at Arsenal and even earned a move to Barcelona.
But the fact that he is a free agent at the age of 30, and has been linked with a move to Serie A’s bottom side Benevento by the Sun, makes it pretty clear that not everything has been on song for Alex.
So it should be no surprise to learn that West Ham fans are divided by the prospect of Song returning to the capital on a free transfer.
Hammers boss David Moyes spent the January window searching high and low for a combative midfielder but he failed in that regard. So the news that Pedro Obiang will be out for the rest of the season has some fans clamouring for the club to delve into the free-agent market once more.
Song certainly stands out as a potentially inspired addition. The 49-capped Cameroon international spent two years on loan at West Ham from Barcelona and produced a number of exceptional midfield performances in his first season, before struggling to make the same impact the following campaign.
But would he be a brilliant bargain, adding experience and much-needed depth like Patrice Evra? Or a cheap last-resort and a reflection of West Ham’s transfer market failures – like Patrice Evra?
It would be great! Song is very strong in the midfield and Nasri could offer an alternative for Lanzini or even play alongside him.— West Ham Brasil (@whubrasil) February 8, 2018
Song when he first joined us was absolutely immense... however later, he was awful. Still have him back if he can regain that earlier form.— ⚒ Andy B ⚒ (@northwesthammer) February 7, 2018
Id rather go for song on a free than evra with obiang out we need a decent cdm him and noble would be solid..evra might have a good year left in him though tbf— ⚒ mark whufc ⚒ (@markwhu) February 7, 2018
Agree Song would of been an ideal replacement for Obiang short term— Rob Waldon WHUFC ⚒ (@RobWaldon) February 6, 2018
Patrice Evra with Alex Song and Carlton Cole to follow that will conclude our transfer business in this window.....— STAN WHUFC (@davestan64) February 6, 2018
Saves me putting my shorts on at the weekend, as I presume they will be asking fans to play soon!— sam ⚒ (@eledile) February 5, 2018
Gives the ball away too much in my opinion. Best days are way behind him. Medical staff are also a bit busy. pic.twitter.com/fQM9sqtNDw— Magic Hammers (@Noeljwhite65) February 2, 2018
No - he was a bit of a lazy player. No real commitment— Roger (@RogerCaxton) February 2, 2018
