According to German publication Bild, Arsenal have joined a host of clubs keen on signing Hoffenheim star Kerem Demirbay this summer.
The report claims that the talented midfielder has a release clause of around £28 million, a figure that has alerted top clubs in England, Italy and Spain such as AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal have utilised the German market in recent years, with players including Granit Xhaka and record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining the Gunners over the past two seasons.
The German top flight is a great source for talent spotters, and a number of players tend to have a desire to try their luck abroad, with Bayern Munich regularly picking up the silverware and making the league un-competitive.
Demirbay joined Hoffenheim from Fortuna Dusseldorf two years ago and, under the guidance of popular young manager Julian Nagelsmann, he has become a midfield talisman for the club.
The 24-year-old generally plays as an attack-minded central midfielder, and he played a pivotal role in Hoffenheim’s excellent showing last season with an impressive six goals and eight assists in 27 league starts.
Demirbay has gone on to earn international recognition with the German national team, scoring a goal at the Confederations Cup last summer as the World Cup champions lifted the trophy.
With the future of Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey in question due to their contract situations, manager Arsene Wenger has reason to look at midfield alternatives and Demirbay represents a sound proposition.
