Newcastle United reportedly chased a January deal for Lovro Majer.

According to Calcio Mercato, Newcastle United made a January move to sign NK Lokomotiva playmaker Lovro Majer in January – but couldn’t strike a deal.
The Magpies did tie up three loan deals in January, bringing in Kenedy, Islam Slimani and Martin Dubravka until the end of the season as Rafael Benitez managed to boost his squad.
Benitez couldn’t land a playmaker though, and it’s now believed that Newcastle launched a move for NK Lokomotiva star Lovro Majer, but couldn’t strike an agreement.

It’s believed that Newcastle wanted to land Majer, but terms of around £13.3million to £16million could not be agreed, meaning Majer stays in Croatia until at least the summer.
A sensible target
Whilst manager Benitez currently has limited funds due to Mike Ashley’s lack of investment, signing talented young players with major potential has to be a priority for Newcastle, and Majer fits the bill.

The 20-year-old playmaker has notched seven goals and three assists in 20 games in all competitions for Lokomotiva this season, and is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in Croatian football.
Majer already has his first Croatia cap, and looks destined for a bright future, meaning Newcastle should certainly continue to keep tabs on him ahead of the summer transfer window, though they risk additional interest from other clubs.
Nobody has managed to truly make the No. 10 position in Benitez’s Newcastle side their own, and targeting somebody young and promising like Majer was smart for the Magpies, but it seems that financial restrictions again held Benitez back.
