Aston Villa have been in fine form recently. Forgetting the FA Cup defeat at the hands of Peterborough they have been flying since the turn of the year. Aston Villa are the form team in the Championship, winning their last five games and moving up to third in the Championship as a result.

One player who can certainly take some credit for the club’s change in fortunes is Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason.

At one point it looked as though his days at Villa Park were numbered. He was out of the first-team picture and battles with injury had seen him fall down the pecking order. The former Basel star was being linked with a move back to Italy, where he had previously played for Pescara, and it seemed he would go down as a flop.

But since he was recalled to the starting line-up for the 1-0 win at Middlesbrough in December he has been sensational. Running the game from midfield Aston Villa fans have been extremely impressed with the player, who had initially struggled to make an impact at Villa Park.

They have won all their games in the league since and Bjarnason’s record in the league actually extends further. Aston Villa have won the last eight games in the Championship where Bjarnason has featured - a run stretching back to the September win against Burton Albion.

This weekend Villa face off with the Brewers yet again and will hope Bjarnason, and the team, keep up their fantastic form and their hunt for automatic promotion.
